Pulau Ubin – for those who like photography, nature and wildlife

Photo:

A 15-minute boat ride away from Singapore is one of its surrounding islands, Pulau Ubin. This is a favourite excursion for those who like photography, nature and wildlife. Rustic and tranquil, Pulau Ubin is home to diverse wildlife and habitats such as mangrove swamps. You can also find Singapore’s last remaining kampung (traditional village) on this island.

If you prefer cycling instead of walking, you can rent a bicycle to explore the island. There are a few quaint restaurants operating on the island, serving seafood and other favourite local dishes. A popular spot to visit is the Chek Jawa Wetlands and Boardwalk, located on the East of the island. The boardwalk is 1.1km long and offers scenic views of the wetlands and its marine wildlife. It is best to visit the boardwalk at low tides, as the coral reefs, mangrove swamps and marine life will be easily seen. You can locate the tidal timetable at the NParks website.

To get to Pulau Ubin from Singapore mainland, you will need to buy a ferry ticket at the Changi Point Ferry Terminal. The boats run from 7am to 7pm daily and each boat takes a maximum of 12 passengers. Do note that the boats do not have a regular timetable and only set off when there is a full load of passengers. Hence it is a good idea to plan your visit on a weekend, when there will be higher demand for boat rides. Don’t forget to pack insect repellent for your trip, to avoid being bitten by mosquitos and sand flies.
