If you are in the Northland area of New Zealand then the Te Paki Sand Dunes, or Big Sand Dunes as they are also called is an awesome experience.
You can drive there yourself or get a tour to take you there. If you have a car, I’d drive. There is a carpark when you get there you can use.
There is a nice lady (on the day we went) in a shipping container full of boogie boards. You can probably take your own boards but we hired them and I’m not sure I’d want to use my own as it might be a bit rough. I think the hire was about $10 a board.
There is some serious walking through sand and the sand dunes are HUGE! So, be prepared for some huffing and puffing.
Try it out on a couple of smaller hills first as if you take on a major slope of sand you could hurt yourself.
Just the scale of the dunes and the scenery is amazing.
