If you’re in Rotorua and want to experience some thermal hot pools and volcanic activity the Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland is a cheaper and, in my opinion, better geothermal experience than any others in Rotorua and the surrounding areas. Te Puia (Whakarewarewa) is great but it’s really expensive. If you want thermal with a Maori experience, then Te Puia is good. If you’re really after some great steaming mud pools and boiling sulphur then Waiotapu is awesome.
It’s just a short 15 minute drive south of Rotorua. You can drive or there are optional tours.
Waiotapu has the famous champagne pool which is stunning.
It’s a gentle walk which makes it perfect for kids and can be less busy, although very popular.
There is a cafe and gift shop and the whole thing is set up very well.
