City Travel Tip #913

Little India’s best retail destination – Mustafa Centre

Photo:

Most of Singapore might seem extremely modern. But there is one area which looks like it could be from an entirely different country – Little India.

The streets of Little India are lined with shophouses, many of which date back to decades earlier. As Little India is popular among the migrant workers in Singapore who originated from the Indian subcontinent, most of the shops cater to their needs. This includes products imported from India such as food and spices. Little India is also home to many food stalls offering North and South Indian cuisines.

My favourite place to head to at Little India is Mustafa Centre. This huge retail shop is open 24 hours, and is usually teeming with shoppers on weekends. From groceries to gold jewellery to household appliances and DVDs, you can find anything at Mustafa.

Some shophouses along Little India have been converted to boutique hotels and hostels. Hence, you could consider these options if you’d like to stay off the beaten track while in Singapore.
