Maketu beach at low tide is a great place for the kids to discover sea creatures. There are loads of boulders and rocks pools you can play in and lots of crabs and other creatures worth checking out.
There is also a cafe there you can get a pie, ice cream or fish & chips (They have a full menu).
You can walk quite a long way around the point of the bay but just be careful that you don’t get stuck when the tide comes in.
If you’re a fishing type – you can surfcast off the beach where the estuary starts, which is right outside the Cafe and Surf Club.
