Marina Barrage – Picnicking and Kite flying in Singapore

Photo:

Marina Barrage is a popular spot for families in Singapore as it is one of the best places in the city for a picnic or water sports.

Marina Barrage is actually Singapore’s 15th reservoir. With its calm water all year round, Marina Reservoir is thus ideal for various water sports such as kayaking, pedal boating and canoeing.

The rooftop of the barrage is a large green space that is great for picnics with friends and family. It is also a perfect place to enjoy spectacular views of the Singapore skyline because entry to the barrage rooftop is free. It is also common to see people kite flying at the Marina Barrage due to the strong winds and open space.

The Marina Barrage is more than just a pretty place. It acts to prevent flooding in some of the lower lying areas Singapore. When there is heavy rain, the Barrage has gates which open to release excess storm water into the sea when the tide is low. When the tide is high, giant pumps drain water into the sea effectively.

If you are keen to find out more about Singapore’s green plans, visit the Sustainable Singapore Gallery at the barrage’s ground floor. This gallery educates visitors on the environmental and water issues through interactive displays and exhibits.
