Did you know that there is more at Orchard Road than just malls and shops? At the edge of Orchard is the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Founded in 1859, the Gardens is an iconic Singapore landmark. In fact, it is even listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At the Gardens, you can see many different types of flowers and plants, including Singapore’s national flower – the Vanda Miss Joaquim, an orchid. There is also the VIP Orchid Garden, which houses orchids named after dignitaries and VIPs who visit Singapore. It is supposedly a big honor if you have an orchid named after you! Such famous people with their own namesake orchids include the late Princess Diana, and Margaret Thatcher.
My favourite part of the Gardens are the three lakes. Although they may be artificial, they are beautiful and it is calming to sit by the water. Next to the Swan Lake is a large open air theatre, which often features free music performances.
As there is much to walk and explore in the Gardens, I suggest you plan your visit in the early morning or late evening, when it is less sunny and humid.
