Tips for travelling to Singapore with babies

Have a newborn and planning a trip to Singapore? Singapore is generally family-friendly and a safe place to bring your babies. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind as you plan your trip:

1. Nursing rooms, toilets and diaper change facilities
Most public toilets, especially those in shopping malls and at tourist attractions (e.g. Singapore Zoo, museums) have diaper changing facilities. Do note that hawker centre toilets may not have such facilities unless they have been newly renovated. You can also find nursing rooms easily available in shopping malls and tourist attractions.

If you intend to breastfeed in public, you would want to bring along a nursing cover so you can do so discretely. It is not against the law to breastfeed in public in Singapore, although it is still uncommon. Hence unfortunately there may be some unwanted stares. According to the Singapore Police Force, “It is not an offence to breastfeed in public if the woman is decently clad and she does not expose her breast more than is necessary to breastfeed her child.”

2. Water for formula milk
If you feed your babies formula milk, rest assured that Singapore’s tap water is drinkable as is. You can always boil the tap water first, if you prefer. Hence it is not necessary to purchase bottled water for this purpose.

3. Dining in public
If your baby is old enough for a child’s seat, you will find that almost all restaurants and eateries in Singapore are equipped with high chairs. Note that high chairs are not available at hawker centres.

4. Stroller rentals
If you did not bring along your stroller to Singapore, you can rent one at most of the shopping malls and tourist attractions. Simply call before hand or check their official website to see if the service is available.

5. Purchasing baby necessities
Out of diaper wipes, diapers or more? Not to worry as Singapore has a number of baby shops you can purchase your necessities from. Supermarkets such as NTUC Fairprice and Cold Storage also sell baby products such as diapers, formula milk, bottles and diaper wipes.
